Lochby starts with an interesting premise: instead of committing to one notebook, carry several notebooks together.
Products like the Field Journal use a reusable outer cover to hold replaceable notebook inserts. One insert can serve one purpose, another something completely different.
I find the distinction important.
A conventional notebook treats the page as part of a permanent sequence. A multi-insert system starts treating the **book itself as a module**.
That gets much closer to how I naturally work.
I like starting a small notebook for a specific project. It creates a boundary around the work. When the project is finished, the notebook becomes an artifact of that particular period rather than another section buried somewhere in a much larger book.
Lochby’s approach lets several of those books travel together while retaining their individual identities.
**What I’m taking from it:** Modularity doesn’t necessarily have to happen at the page level. The notebook itself can be the organizational unit.
